After a selection procedure, MTD landscape architects were commissioned to draw up a redesign plan and image quality plan for the public space in the center of Ermelo. The participation process with involved residents, entrepreneurs and municipal officials was an express part of the assignment.

The redevelopment plan area extends along the 1.5 kilometer long Stationsstraat, starting at 'het Weitje', the origin of the village in the east and ending at the railway station in the west. In addition to a new layout of the cross section, the redesign plan introduces high-quality and sustainable materials; baked clinkers, natural stone and street furniture specially designed for Ermelo.

Space has been made in the street profile, also underground, for the planting of trees, so that Ermelo can realize its ambitions as a green municipality on the Veluwe. The design plan for the public space is primarily aimed at strengthening the cohesion and appearance of the center as a whole. In addition, the distinction between the individual sub-areas is highlighted; the shopping streets and squares get their own atmosphere depending on their main function and meaning.

Both visitors and entrepreneurs appreciate the center of Ermelo as a contemporary and inviting shopping and residential area with a village and 'green', or Veluwe, character. The squares, such as the Pauwenplein and the completely renovated Raadhuisplein, form new focal points for activities and meetings.
