the assignment
At the same time as a radical renovation and ‘facelift’ of the existing villa along Fazantlaan in Berkel-Enschot, MTD landschapsarchitecten was commissioned to draw up a garden design. A coherent design for the residence and the surrounding outdoor area was created in conjunction with the client, the architect and the interior architect. The client's wish was to create a ‘classical garden with a contemporary appearance’.

the design
By way of a coherent image of the paving materials, the plants and the design details, a unity has been created between the front, side and back gardens. Through all the seasons the defined, classical  overall scheme forms an architectural basis, within which there's plenty of room for alternation in the colour, shape and texture of plants, like solitary shrubs, perennial plants and accentuations in the form of tubbed and potted plants. The terrace ensures there's space for an outdoor area which ties in with the living room and also the kitchen, and through its materialisation (sanded petit granit), it matches up with the materials applied in the architecture. The depth of the garden is enhanced by two prominent lines of sight. From the living room the elongated pond offers a vista from the house to the more scenic atmosphere in the rear of the garden. A wooden pergola with climbers has the same effect when looking from the kitchen and corresponds with an intimate place to sit at the back of the garden. The applied petit granit paving and baked clinkers give the garden a classical but also sustainable and atmospheric appearance. The application of upmarket garden furniture and plant tubs emphasizes a modern and contemporary style.
