The municipality of Tilburg has great ambitions for the realization of a more sustainable public space of the city. Given the current urban densification challenge, there is an urgent need to secure space for greener and climate-resilient public areas alongside the ongoing construction projects. This will also enhance and make the natural values within the urban fabric more accessible.
All of this must be seen in the context of the Paris Climate Agreement, translated into Tilburg's ambition of being ‘Climate Neutral by 2045’. Together with engaged residents and entrepreneurs, Tilburg is working towards creating a vital city where it will remain pleasant to live, work, and spend time in the future.
In collaboration with the municipality of Tilburg, MTD Landscape Architects developed the inspiration document "Code Green Tilburg". This document identifies the areas within the city with potential for greening and explores how these areas could be directly and attractively connected to each other and to the landscape surrounding the city. The origin of Tilburg serves as an important source of inspiration for this, drawing on the assembly of reclamation strips and Frankish triangles on the higher parts of the cover sand landscape. Additionally, the well-known, almost unnoticed, Tilburg tradition of creating parks and squares serves as a significant inspiration.
The inspiration document addresses the spatial boundaries and visual quality of the individual structural elements at the city level, as well as the programmatic or thematic and narrative significance of these elements. In Code Green, thirteen iconic projects are identified and visualized that could act as catalysts for this transformation process. Driven by urgency and feasibility, a prioritization is also provided, highlighting the "low-hanging fruit" that can be realized this year. Strategic use is made of building initiatives and major maintenance projects in public spaces, or in other words, "making work with work".
MTD Landscape Architects is currently working on further elaboration and concretization of several of these iconic projects for the municipality of Tilburg.
