Kalliste housing development together with its partners MTD landscape architects and Bedaux de Brouwer architects won the tendering procedure for the development of the Bernardushof in Oud Gastel!
It is intended that on the grounds of the former Bernardusschool, the Kerkstraat 3a-5 and the field on the Mgr. Meeuwissenstraat 29 homes are being realized for different target groups. The corresponding public area will also be developed by Kalliste.
The urban plan of the Bernardushof focuses on creating an informal village setting with natural connections to the environment; not a rigid street pattern but an informal sequence of village spaces such as streets, squares and gardens.
The history of the place plays an important role in the plan. Not only in the urban design, where a new meaning is given to the old monastery and the former Bernardusschool, but also in the design of the public space, history serves as an important starting point.
This way the relationship between the church and the new village area is made manifest. The slightly higher church is stubbornly 'crooked' within the subdivision of the adjoining new residential area. This autonomous location is used as a reason to place the church on a 'pedestal' in the green. With this, the church also has a special place in the public space of the Bernardushof.
Hans Wierikx, Alderman of Spatial Planning: "After the information moment at the beginning of this year, we are delighted that the tendering process has been completed successfully. The selection committee has opted for the preliminary design of the developer from Nieuwegein. The design and the accompanying plan of approach are in line with the ideas of our municipality ... If everything runs smoothly, construction can start in the spring of 2020 ".
