Opening of Schijndel's high street

September 23, 2015

On Friday the 11th of September the high street of Schijndel has officially been put into use in a grand way. Schijndel celebrated the revealing of the returned village pump on the corner of the Hoofdstraat and the pompstraat by exibiting two laser shows. For this occasion Sint Servattus provided the pump with beer and Counselor Bart Classen was the one who draughted the first glass. In addition to this there where performances of the Schijndel rock band Screaming Billy and the sing duo ZUS. Also the shops stayed open extra late this Friday evening.

The Municipality of Schijndel has improved the quality of the public space in the centre of its village. The increased traffic and parking problems called for a comprehensive vision on the public space of the entire village core.
In view of this the municipality asked MTD landschapsarchitecten to draw up a restructuring plan for the Market, the surroundings of the Glazen Boerderij (glass farmhouse) and the most important shopping streets of the core; Hoofdstraat. A significant aim of the plans was to enhance the rural, village-like identity of Schijndel. In this respect the idea was also to bring back the village pump which had disappeared and to make the tramline, which had ever run through here, recognisable again in the streetscape. This happens with a strip of natural stone in the flooring of the high street in combination with natural stone slabs, the so-called ‘track slabs’. Hence the three ‘K’s of Schijndel are visualised; Kousen (stockings), Kaarsen (candles) and Klompen (clogs). But there is also attention for the Zusters van Liefde (Sisters of Love), and the history of the tram.
With the new plan Schijndel has gained a new user friendly village centre!
