In August 2022, MTD was commissioned to draw up a vision and development plan for the Grotestraat in Almelo. In recent years, the street has been transforming from a shopping area into an area where living and shopping are combined. And with the redevelopment, the Grotestraat should be able to look forward to a sustainable future again.
Important aspects of the redevelopment are themes such as more space for greenery and sustainability. All at the expense of space for traffic.
This has been given shape in the vision and development plan by planting new trees, planting areas and facade gardens. The redevelopment also introduces a separate sewer system. In addition, attention has been paid to identity and quality of stay. For example, the historic sidewalks are being reintroduced, a traditional Dutch brick is being used and seating areas are being added. A 'waterwork' has been introduced that provides a historical image of the Grotestraat with its former canals and city gates. The (re)new(ed) design should ensure lower driving speeds for cars and slow traffic, so that the quality of life in the Grotestraat is enhanced.
